建築家ハインリヒ・ラインハルトとゲオルク・ズーゼングスによって設計されたこの建物は、1889年のパリ万国博覧会の機械ギャラリー(Galerie des machines)をモデルにしています。しかし、外観はより厳格なネオルネッサンス様式で建てられました。これは、当初のアール・ヌーヴォー様式の案よりも、威厳のある要塞のような外観を好んだ皇帝ヴィルヘルム2世の介入によるものと伝えられています。駅の正面玄関の両側には、高さ45メートルの時計塔が2つそびえ立っています。
