A Estação Central de Hamburgo (Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, Hbf) é a principal estação ferroviária da cidade de Hamburgo e a mais movimentada de toda a Alemanha. Arquitetura e Design
A característica mais marcante da estação é a sua magnífica e imponente arquitetura. A estrutura principal é dominada por uma enorme cobertura de ferro e vidro com 70 metros de largura que se estende sobre as plataformas, sendo o maior hall de estação sem colunas da Alemanha.
Projetado pelos arquitetos Heinrich Reinhardt e Georg Süßenguth, o edifício foi inspirado na Galerie des machines (Galeria das Máquinas) da Exposição Universal de Paris de 1889. O exterior, no entanto, foi construído num estilo neorrenascentista mais austero, supostamente devido à intervenção do Kaiser Guilherme II, que preferia um aspeto imponente, semelhante a uma fortaleza, em vez das propostas originais em estilo Arte Nova. A estação é marcada por duas torres de relógio de 45 metros de altura que ladeiam a entrada principal.
Layout e Atmosfera
Ao contrário de muitas grandes estações europeias que são terminais (estações de passagem), a Hamburg Hbf é uma estação de passagem. Os carris e as plataformas estão localizados num corte abaixo do nível da rua.
O átrio principal de passageiros não está ao nível do solo, mas sim numa ponte que atravessa os carris. Esta área inclui o Wandelhalle (Salão de Passeios), um grande centro comercial coberto de dois andares, inaugurado em 1991. Este centro comercial contém mais de 75 lojas, restaurantes e centros de serviços, e funciona sete dias por semana, fazendo da estação um importante centro comercial e social por si só.
